Entering 2025, Gituamba Bridge Kasarani C.B.O. had spent its first four years since registration responding fairly reactively to whatever problem was most urgent at a given moment, footbridge repairs when the crossing failed, a savings group when women asked for support organizing one, tree planting when erosion became visible after a bad rainy season.

At a planning session in January, the founding committee made a deliberate decision to organize this existing, somewhat scattered work into five formal program pillars, infrastructure advocacy, education, environment, women's economic empowerment, and health, each with its own small set of ongoing activities and, eventually, a dedicated volunteer program officer.

This was less about starting new work and more about recognizing and structuring work already underway: the table banking group already existed, the informal footbridge repairs already happened, but naming them as formal pillars made it easier to plan a calendar of activities, track basic outcomes, and communicate clearly to partners and potential donors what the organization actually does.

“We were doing five different things but describing ourselves as one vague thing, a group that helps the community. Naming the five pillars clearly was the moment we could finally explain our work in a single sentence to someone who had never met us.”
— Committee chairperson

The five pillars set in this January 2025 planning session remain the structure you see reflected throughout this website today, and each has since grown its own track record of activities, from the girls' mentorship cohort to the annual stream cleanup.

We revisit these priorities at each Annual General Meeting and welcome member input on where the organization should focus next.
